Always verify with official UPSC notifications. This page reflects information from UPSC CDS 1 2026 notification (February 2026) and CDS 2 2026 notification (released May 20, 2026). Exact dates, age windows, and vacancies change every cycle. Visit upsc.gov.in for authoritative information.
๐ŸŽ“ Eligibility
What is the basic eligibility for CDS? How is it different from NDA?โ–ผ
CDS is a graduate-level entry โ€” the key difference from NDA (which is for Class XII students):
  • NDA: For Class XII students, age 16.5โ€“19.5 years. Join before completing degree.
  • CDS: For graduates (or final-year students), age typically 19โ€“25 years depending on academy. Commission at a higher level.
CDS eligibility also varies by academy:
  • IMA (Army): Unmarried male graduates, age 19โ€“24 years.
  • INA (Navy): Unmarried male graduates in Engineering, age 19โ€“24 years.
  • AFA (Air Force): Unmarried male graduates with Physics + Mathematics at Class XII level, age 19โ€“24 years.
  • OTA (Army โ€” Short Service): Male and female graduates, age 19โ€“25 years. Widows / divorcees without children also eligible for female OTA.
Can final-year graduation students apply for CDS?โ–ผ
Yes. Final-year students can apply and appear for the written exam. However, they must submit their degree certificate before the SSB interview or by the date stipulated by the respective academy. If you appear in the written exam but haven't graduated by the SSB date, you will not be eligible to attend.
โšก Apply even if you're in your final year โ€” don't wait to graduate. The written exam shortlist is announced months later, by which time most final-year students have completed their degrees.
What are the educational qualifications required for each academy?โ–ผ
AcademyEducational Qualification
IMADegree from a recognised university (any stream)
INAEngineering degree in specific branches (BE/B.Tech)
AFA (Flying)Degree with Physics & Maths at Class XII, or BE/B.Tech; must have passed PCM in 10+2 with 60%
OTA (SSC)Degree from a recognised university (any stream)
What is the age limit for CDS 2026?โ–ผ
Age limits as per CDS 2 2026 notification:
  • IMA: Unmarried male, born between 2 Jul 2003 โ€“ 1 Jul 2008
  • INA: Unmarried male, same window as IMA
  • AFA: Unmarried male, born between 2 Jul 2003 โ€“ 1 Jul 2008
  • OTA: Male and female, born between 2 Jul 2002 โ€“ 1 Jul 2008
Exact DOB windows are updated every notification โ€” always verify the current one at upsc.gov.in.
Can women apply for CDS? Which academies are open to women?โ–ผ
Women can apply for CDS โ€” but only for OTA (Officers Training Academy), which offers Short Service Commission (SSC). IMA, INA, and AFA are currently restricted to male candidates through CDS.

For OTA, women must be graduates. Widows and divorcees without children who have not remarried are also eligible for OTA female vacancies.
How many attempts are allowed for CDS?โ–ผ
UPSC does not restrict the number of CDS attempts. You can appear as many times as you remain within the eligible age limit for your preferred academy. Since CDS is held twice a year, this gives candidates potentially 4โ€“10 attempts depending on their age and which academy they are targeting.
๐Ÿ“ Exam Pattern & Syllabus
What is the CDS written exam pattern?โ–ผ
The pattern differs by academy:
AcademyPapersMarks EachTotalDuration Each
IMA / INA / AFAEnglish, GK, Maths1003002 hours
OTAEnglish, GK only1002002 hours
All papers are objective-type (MCQ). Negative marking applies. Papers are in English.
๐Ÿ“Œ OTA candidates don't appear for Mathematics โ€” this is a key advantage for those from non-science backgrounds aiming for Army Short Service Commission.
What is the negative marking in CDS?โ–ผ
  • Each correct answer: +1 mark
  • Each wrong answer: โˆ’1/3 mark (approximately 0.33 marks deducted)
  • Unattempted questions: no penalty
The penalty is proportionally lighter than NDA, but still significant enough that random guessing is not advisable. Attempt when you have at least 60โ€“70% confidence.
What is the difficulty level of CDS โ€” how does it compare to UPSC Civil Services?โ–ผ
CDS is considered moderate in difficulty โ€” harder than state PSC prelims but significantly easier than UPSC Civil Services. Key points:
  • English: Graduate level โ€” comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, idioms. More application-based than memory-based.
  • GK: Broad coverage โ€” History, Geography, Polity, Economics, Science, Current Affairs. Class VIโ€“XII NCERT level plus current affairs.
  • Mathematics: Up to Class X standard (Elementary Mathematics) โ€” basic algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, mensuration. No calculus or advanced topics.
CDS Maths is Class X level โ€” not graduate level. Many students find English and GK more competitive than Maths in CDS.
What books should I use to prepare for CDS?โ–ผ
  • English: Wren & Martin (Grammar), Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis, CDS previous year papers.
  • GK: NCERT Class VIโ€“XII (History, Geography, Polity, Science), Lucent's GK, The Hindu / PIB for current affairs.
  • Mathematics: NCERT Class IXโ€“X, R.S. Aggarwal's Elementary Mathematics, Arihant CDS Maths.
  • Combined: Arihant / Pathfinder CDS exam book (all papers combined), 10-year previous year question papers.
โš”๏ธ Selection Process
What is the complete CDS selection process?โ–ผ
  1. Written Exam (UPSC) โ€” shortlists candidates for SSB based on performance
  2. SSB Interview (5 days) โ€” at SSB centres across India. Stage I: OIR + PPDT; Stage II: Psychology Tests, GTO Tasks, Personal Interview
  3. Medical Examination (3โ€“5 days) โ€” at designated Military Hospitals
  4. Document Verification โ€” degree certificate, identity proof, domicile
  5. Final Merit List โ€” based on combined written + SSB marks. Commission into respective academy.
The SSB for IMA, INA, and AFA is held at Allahabad, Bhopal, Bangalore, or other centres. OTA SSB is at Chennai SSB.
What is the difference between Permanent Commission (PC) and Short Service Commission (SSC)?โ–ผ
  • Permanent Commission (PC): A full career in the armed forces until retirement age (typically 54โ€“58 years depending on rank). IMA, INA, and AFA grant PC.
  • Short Service Commission (SSC): Initial 10-year service tenure, extendable to 14 years. Candidates can opt for PC after 10 years subject to vacancies and performance. OTA grants SSC โ€” for both men and women.
SSC officers are not second-tier โ€” they serve with equal rank, pay, and honour. Many SSC officers subsequently convert to PC. SSC is also a great option for those who want to serve but eventually transition to civilian careers.
What is the CDS cut-off? How many marks are needed?โ–ผ
UPSC does not publish an official cut-off. Based on historical trends:
  • Written exam cut-off (IMA/INA/AFA): Approximately 60โ€“80 out of 300 (varies widely โ€” roughly 25โ€“30%).
  • OTA written cut-off: Approximately 45โ€“60 out of 200.
  • Final merit cut-off (Written + SSB): Higher โ€” SSB performance is the dominant factor for final selection.
The written exam is a screening filter. A good SSB performance can more than compensate for an average written score.
๐ŸŽ–๏ธ Training & Career
What is the training duration and what academy do CDS candidates join?โ–ผ
AcademyTraining DurationLocationCommission

  • Lieutenant (on commissioning): Pay Level 10 โ€” Basic pay โ‚น56,100 + allowances
  • Total in-hand (approx.): โ‚น80,000โ€“โ‚น1,00,000+ per month including Military Service Pay, DA, HRA (or free accommodation), transport allowance, etc.

๐Ÿ“‹ Application & Practical
What is new in the UPSC application process for 2026? ๐Ÿ†• 2026โ–ผ
UPSC has introduced a new modular application system for all 2026 exams including CDS:
  • Universal Registration Number (URN): Created once, valid permanently for all future UPSC exams. Replaces the old OTR system.
  • Common Application Form (CAF): Filled after URN. Requires both an uploaded photo and a live-captured photo. Must match your actual appearance โ€” mismatches cause rejection.
  • Exam-Specific Module: Select CDS exam, choose centres, pay fee.
  • No corrections after submission. URN profile can be edited only once โ€” verify everything before locking.
๐Ÿ†• New for 2026: Mandatory face authentication at the examination venue on exam day. Arrive well before the reporting time. Exam centres are allotted on first-apply-first-allot basis โ€” early applicants get preferred centres.
What are the upcoming CDS exam dates in 2026?โ–ผ
  • CDS 1 2026: Written exam held in February/April 2026 (exact date as per UPSC notification)
  • CDS 2 2026: Written exam scheduled for 13 September 2026. Application open 20 May โ€“ 9 June 2026. Total vacancies: 451 across IMA, INA, AFA, and OTA.
๐Ÿ“… Always check the current UPSC exam calendar at upsc.gov.in โ€” dates are final only after the official notification is published.
Is the CDS exam conducted in Hindi?โ–ผ
The GK and Mathematics papers are available in both Hindi and English. The English paper is conducted only in English. You select your medium during application.
Can I apply for multiple academies in one application?โ–ผ
Yes. One CDS application lets you choose your preference order among the academies you are eligible for. You appear for the written papers relevant to your choices โ€” if you apply only for OTA, you write only English and GK. If you also apply for IMA/INA/AFA, you write Mathematics as well.
Recommendation: Apply for all academies you are eligible for. You are shortlisted for SSB based on your written score against each academy's vacancies. More options = more chances.
