📌 AFCAT Pattern (LR12): Mirror and Water Images contribute 2–3 questions per paper. Mirror image = reflection across a vertical axis (left-right swap). Water image = reflection across a horizontal axis (top-bottom flip). Both test spatial visualisation. Practice with letters and numbers until automatic.
1. Mirror Image — Left-Right Reflection
Rule
- Mirror placed on the RIGHT side of the object
- Left and right are swapped; top and bottom stay the same
- For text: letters appear reversed (laterally inverted)
- The image appears at equal distance behind the mirror
Letter Mirror Images
- Same in mirror (symmetric): A,H,I,M,O,T,U,V,W,X,Y
- Change in mirror: B→q, C→open other side, d→b, E→flipped, F→flipped, J→L shape, K→flipped, N→N(same?), P→q-shape, R→flipped, S→S-reversed
- Numbers: 0,8 stay same; 2→Z-mirror; 3→E-mirror
📌 Trick: For clock mirror images — if clock shows 10:10, mirror image shows 2:10 (hours reflection: 12 stays, 6 stays, others: mirror time = 12:00 minus given time? Actually: If original time is H:M, mirror time = (11:60) − (H:M). E.g., 10:10 → 11:60−10:10 = 1:50. Standard trick: for clock mirror = subtract from 11:60.
2. Water Image — Top-Bottom Reflection
Rule
- Water image = reflection across a horizontal line
- Top and bottom are swapped; left and right stay the same
- Letters with horizontal symmetry same in water: B,C,D,E,K,H,I,O,X
- Arrows pointing up → arrows pointing down in water image
Combined: Mirror then Water
- Sometimes both reflections applied: rotate 180°
- Mirror + Water = 180° rotation of the figure
- Used to check if options show 180° rotation
📝 AFCAT PYQMirror and Water Images — AFCAT Pattern
Q1. A clock shows 8:20. What time does its mirror image show? (AFCAT I 2025)
- (a) 3:40
- (b) 4:40
- (c) 3:20
- (d) 8:40
Answer: (a) 3:40
Mirror image of clock = subtract given time from 11:60. 11:60 − 8:20 = 3:40. Verify: 8:20 → hour hand near 8. Mirror = near 4 (8 reflected across 12-6 axis → 12−8=4). Minute hand at 20 min → mirror at 40 min (20+40=60; mirror reflects 20 to 40). So: 3:40 ✓. (Some use 12:00 as reference: 12:00−8:20=3:40 — both give same answer.)
Q2. What is the mirror image of the word “FORCE”? (AFCAT II 2024)
- (a) ƎƆЯOF
- (b) ECROف
- (c) FORCE reversed left-right
- (d) Same as original
Answer: (a) — The word reads FORCE from right to left with each letter individually laterally inverted
Mirror image of text: (1) The word order reverses (ECROف reads R to L). (2) Each letter is individually left-right flipped. F→Ⅎ, O→O(same), R→Я, C→flipped C, E→Ǝ. In AFCAT, options show the complete mirror image visually. Key: always reverse the word AND flip each letter.
Q3. An arrow points upward and to the right (NE direction). What is its water image direction? (AFCAT I 2024)
- (a) North-East
- (b) South-East
- (c) North-West
- (d) South-West
Answer: (b) South-East
Water image = top-bottom reflection. An arrow pointing NE (up-right): the vertical component (up) flips to (down). The horizontal component (right) stays. Result: down-right = South-East. Rule: Water image flips only the vertical direction. N becomes S; S becomes N; E and W stay the same.
⚡ Quick Reference — LR12
Mirror Rules
- Left ↔ Right swap; Top-Bottom same
- Clock mirror: 11:60 minus given time
- Symmetric letters (same mirror): A,H,I,M,O,T,U,V,W,X,Y
- Text: reverse word order + flip each letter
Water Rules
- Top ↔ Bottom swap; Left-Right same
- N direction → S direction; S → N
- E and W stay same in water image
- Symmetric (same water): B,C,D,E,K,H,I,O,X
Combined
- Mirror + Water = 180° rotation
- If both applied: every direction reverses
- Practice with letters A-Z for both axes
- Always identify which axis first
