BA04 — Zoology — Animal Kingdom

📖 BA04  ·  AFCAT General Awareness — Biology ★ Moderate Yield

AFCAT tests the logic of classification, not memorisation of every species. Learn the defining feature and two examples per group — that is enough for full marks.

✈ AFCAT Focus: Arthropoda = largest phylum (~80% of all animals); Mammalia defined by mammary glands; birds have hollow bones; Echinodermata = all marine; bat + whale + dolphin = mammals; penguin = bird (not mammal).

1. Major Animal Phyla

PhylumDefining FeatureExamplesAFCAT Key Point
Porifera (Sponges)Pore-bearing body; no true tissues or organsSycon, Spongilla, EuspongiaSimplest multicellular animals; all aquatic
CnidariaStinging cells (cnidocytes); radial symmetryJellyfish, Hydra, Coral, Sea anemoneTwo forms: polyp and medusa
Platyhelminthes (Flatworms)Flat body; acoelomate; mostly parasiticTapeworm, Liver fluke, PlanariaParasites in humans
AnnelidaSegmented body (rings); true coelom; metamerismEarthworm, Leech, NereisEarthworm = Farmer's friend (aerates soil)
ArthropodaJointed appendages; chitin exoskeletonInsects, Spider, Crab, Prawn, ScorpionLARGEST phylum — ~80% of all animal species
EchinodermataSpiny skin; radial symmetry; water vascular systemStarfish, Sea urchin, Sea cucumberAll marine; no freshwater or land species
ChordataNotochord present (at least in embryo)All vertebrates + some invertebratesMost complex group; includes all vertebrates

2. Five Vertebrate Classes

ClassBody TempDefining FeatureExamplesHeart
PISCES (Fish)Cold-bloodedScales; gills for breathing; fins for movementRohu, Shark, Catfish2-chambered
AMPHIBIACold-bloodedMoist skin; gills (larva) → lungs (adult); lay eggs in waterFrog, Toad, Salamander3-chambered
REPTILIACold-bloodedDry scaly skin; lungs; lay leathery eggs on landLizard, Snake, Crocodile, Turtle3½-chambered (4 in croc)
AVES (Birds)Warm-bloodedFeathers; hollow bones; toothless beak; lay hard-shelled eggsPigeon, Eagle, Ostrich, Penguin4-chambered
MAMMALIA (Mammals)Warm-bloodedHair/fur; mammary glands; give birth to live young (mostly)Human, Bat, Whale, Platypus4-chambered
💡 AFCAT Traps:
Bat = Mammal (hair + mammary glands), NOT a bird — even though it flies
Whale / Dolphin = Mammal (breathes air + nurses young), NOT fish — even though it swims
Platypus = Mammal (mammary glands), even though it lays eggs (monotreme exception)
Penguin = Bird/Aves (feathers + 4-chambered heart), NOT mammal — even though it can't fly

📝 AFCAT PYQs — Zoology

Q1. Largest phylum in the animal kingdom? AFCAT PYQ
(a) Chordata(b) Mollusca(c) Arthropoda(d) Annelida
✔ (c) Arthropoda
Arthropoda contains ~10 million species — ~80% of all animals. Includes insects, spiders, crabs, prawns, scorpions. Defining: jointed appendages + chitin exoskeleton.
Q2. Bat belongs to class: ⚡ Tricky
(a) Aves(b) Reptilia(c) Amphibia(d) Mammalia
✔ (d) Mammalia
Bats are the only flying mammals. Despite wings, they have hair/fur, mammary glands, are warm-blooded, and give birth to live young. Classification is based on biology, not appearance or ability.

🧠 Quick Memory Chart — BA04

🌎 Key Phyla
  • Arthropoda: LARGEST (jointed legs, chitin)
  • Annelida: segmented (earthworm)
  • Echinodermata: spiny skin; all marine
  • Chordata: notochord (all vertebrates)
✈ Vertebrate Classes
  • Pisces: gills, scales (cold-blooded)
  • Amphibia: land+water (cold-blooded)
  • Reptilia: scaly skin (cold-blooded)
  • Aves: feathers, hollow bones (warm)
  • Mammalia: mammary glands, hair (warm)
💡 AFCAT Traps
  • Bat = mammal (NOT bird)
  • Whale = mammal (NOT fish)
  • Platypus = mammal (lays eggs!)
  • Penguin = bird (does not fly)
  • Frog = cold-blooded amphibian
